Internationalization and Academic Exchange
Internationalization and Academic Exchange
To fully leverage internationalization initiatives and cultivate students’ global perspectives, the Graduate Institute of Education at National Cheng Kung University encourages students to participate in a variety of international academic activities in accordance with the university’s “Guidelines for Student Participation in Bilateral International Exchange and Study Programs.” Specifically, students are encouraged to:
(1) pursue dual-degree programs with partner institutions that have formal agreements with the university;
(2) participate in overseas study through university nominations, partner institution nominations, or independent applications, enrolling in academic programs related to their field of study;
(3) engage in short-term research at international research institutions for a duration of at least one month; and
(4) undertake internships of at least two weeks at overseas academic institutions or enterprises.
These initiatives aim to broaden students’ international outlook. In addition, the institute actively collaborates with international organizations and industries to further enhance the impact and value of its research.
Faculty members also actively participate in academic exchange activities, serving as conference chairs, advisory committee members, workshop co-organizers, and paper presenters. Furthermore, under the university’s policies for recruiting outstanding talent and supporting short-term visits by international scholars, the institute regularly invites domestic and international scholars for academic visits or appointments as adjunct professors.
From August 1, 2019, to July 31, 2023, as well as during the ongoing implementation period from August 1, 2023, to December 31, 2025, the institute has hosted visiting scholars and engaged in faculty exchange activities. Notable examples include:
Professor Jamie M. Zeitzer, a professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and a clinical researcher at the Stanford Sleep Center, as well as a sleep science and light exposure expert at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System, visited Taiwan in 2019 at the invitation of Distinguished Professor Yang Ya-Ting. During his visit, he delivered a keynote lecture for the “Teacher Professional Development Workshop: Sleep and Learning,” conducted public lectures for primary and secondary school teachers nationwide, and facilitated discussions on research topics related to sleep and learning in educational contexts.
In another example of international collaboration, Professor Lin Pei-Ying from the University of Saskatchewan has worked with Distinguished Professor Yang Ya-Ting to form an interdisciplinary research team. This collaboration integrates Professor Yang’s expertise in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), educational technology, and assessment to conduct pilot research on inclusive teacher education and training.
Additionally, some courses offered by the institute incorporate emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and explore innovative applications of AI in society and industry.
